Latinos in US Government and Politics: Who Are They?


A new crop of Latinos extends their reach in American politics. Some are immigrants while others are local citizens. While most are progressive, elevation of some conservatives is apparent. Following are some of the most influential Latinos in pivotal positions across the spectrum of American politics. Despite the steady progress boosting their numbers, Latino representatives in U.S. Government and politics is not consistent with the share of the Hispanic population.

Joe Baca (D), elected to the California State Assembly in 1992 and US Congress in 1999, worked his way up from a shoeshine boy to state congressional representative. He works through the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to increase the number of Hispanics who are placed on the boards of directors at major corporations.
