Best Known Latino Stereotypes: Are They True?

The Gang Banger

Popular media portrays Latino gang activity as though it were the norm rather than the exception. According to the National Gang Center, the gangs throughout the United States are made up of:

  • 46 percent Latino members
  • 35 percent African-American members
  • 11 percent non-Hispanic white members
  • 7 percent other race/ethnicity members

As unpleasant as these statistics are, they only tell a small part of the story. There are approximately 0.6 million Latino gang members in the country. This is only a tiny fraction of the estimated 54 million Latinos living in the United States.
